National Indigenous Peoples Day Event
706 Queen St, Fredericton : 21 June 2021, 1:00 PM
Media are invited to attend a live event on the lawn of the New Brunswick Legislature, taking place in honour of National Indigenous Peoples Day. WTCI, MAWIW, and JEDI are proud to host this celebration of Indigenous people, their history and culture. The theme of the 2021 celebration is Allyship and speakers will highlight how various indigenous organizations are working together to achieve meaningful progress. The Red Dress campaign, the Orange T-shirt Campaign and Jordan’s Principle will all have booths where visitors can buy shirts and learn more about ongoing initiatives.
The event will begin at 1 PM with an opening prayer, followed by an address from Chief Allan Polchies, Jr. There will be presentations from the Wolastoqey Tribal Council Inc, the Joint Economic Development Initiative and MAWIW.
Finally the event will include a memorial for the 215 children found at the Kamloops Residential School. Organizers ask that attendees bring a pair of new or unused children’s shoes, to be laid on the steps of the Legislative building. After the event, the shoes will be donated to children in need.
The event will proceed rain or shine.
