Indigenous-Owned Renewable Energy Project

April 22, 2025

The six Chiefs of the Wolastoqey Nation in New Brunswick are collaborating with Natural Forces to build one of the largest Indigenous-owned renewable energy projects in Canada.

We are working to develop the “Salmon River Wind Project*” (*to be renamed through a community-led process) in southern New Brunswick. The project will produce wind energy, an increasingly more cost-competitive energy source.

The “Salmon River Wind Project” will contribute to the provincial goal of adding 1,400 MW of wind power to the grid by 2035 and displace more costly, less environmentally friendly forms of energy. The Project would consist of up to 34 wind turbines, with a total capacity of approximately 203 MW. This size of project would supply enough electricity to power up to an estimated 43,000 New Brunswick homes annually. The proposed turbine location is approximately 9 km southwest of Hammondvale on provincial Crown land.

Benefits include:

  • Stable revenue source for Wolastoqey communities for generations to come.
  • Local employment and contracting opportunities during the development, construction, operation, and decommissioning phases of the Project.
  • Economic spinoffs from Project activities in the local region.
  • Emission-free electricity contributing to energy security and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

“This project is good for our communities and good for all New Brunswickers. It is no secret that our province needs diverse, reliable, and renewable energy sources. This is a win-win-win. We anticipate announcing a purchase agreement in the coming weeks. In the meantime we felt it important to share this exciting news with our communities.” – Chief Gabby Atwin on behalf of the six Chiefs.

We will undertake a series of community meetings for members to learn more. In addition, WNNB will begin a community engagement process to name the project. The Project is being developed by a partnership between Wolastoqey Resource Developments Inc. and Natural Forces. Wolastoqey Resource Developments Inc. is the economic development corporation for WNNB and Natural Forces is a private independent power producer based in Halifax.
