Job Opportunity: Elver Research Field Technician

Term: Temporary 4-month Position, mid-April to August 31, 2026, with possibility of extension to work on other projects.

Overview: 

The Wolastoqey Nation in New Brunswick (WNNB) provides high-quality scientific analysis and technical support to New Brunswick’s six Wolastoqey communities on resource development matters that impact Aboriginal and Treaty Rights. Our organization strives to protect these Rights and the natural resources for future generations. Since our inception in 2017, WNNB has built a passionate and highly motivated team of technical and legal experts and a workplace that values interdisciplinary collaboration. The WNNB is establishing a long-term monitoring project that expands juvenile American eel (commonly called glass eel, or elver) data collection within New Brunswick. There is currently very little information available to inform the management and conservation of elvers in this area. We will be hiring two Field Technicians to aid in elver data collection within the Wolastoq and other select waterbodies. Working alongside the fisheries team at the WNNB, the successful candidates will be responsible for preparation and execution of fieldwork throughout the duration of the elver season.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and install fishing gear for elver collection.
  • Operate, maintain, and monitor fishing gear and environmental monitoring gear for field data and samples.
  • Collect abiotic data (e.g. water quality and other aquatic monitoring).
  • Collect biotic data (e.g. Elver counts, weights, pigment stage).
  • Ensure proper handling and care of all aquatic animals to prevent unnecessary mortalities.
  • Carry out data entry in an accurate and organized manner.
  • Assist in data importing, data management, and report writing when necessary.
  • Communicate with harvesters, the public and provincial/federal conservation and protection staff regarding field activities.

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications, attributes and skills:

  • Positive and enthusiastic attitude, willingness to learn and the ability to work collaboratively.
  • Excellent organizational skills and strong attention to detail.
  • Comfortable working in an outdoor environment over uneven terrain (rivers, streambeds, wetlands) and in variable weather conditions.
  • Takes precautions to ensure a safe working environment for themselves and fellow crew members.
  • Basic physical fitness and the ability to lift a minimum of 25kg and to perform repetitive manual tasks.
  • This position will require work outside of regular hours, including evenings and weekends. We value a healthy work-life balance and in instances where extra hours are required to meet project milestones, we offer flexible compensation options, including time off in lieu.
  • A valid NB driver’s license. Travel to field sites from head office will occur in a company-owned or rented vehicle, however, employees are expected to provide their own transportation to head office.
  • Wilderness First Aid and Swiftwater Rescue Training are considered an asset however opportunities for training will be provided
  • Past aquatic, environmental, or fisheries field work experience is considered an asset.
  • Ability to accurately transcribe field collected data into a spreadsheet or database.

Remuneration: $23.00 – $25.50/hr, minimum 37.5 hours/week for 16 weeks
