Overview:
The Wolastoqey Nation in New Brunswick (WNNB) provides high-quality scientific analysis and technical support to New Brunswick’s six Wolastoqey communities on resource development matters that impact Aboriginal and Treaty Rights. Our organization strives to protect these Rights and the natural resources for future generations. We are seeking an organized, self-motivated individual with experience in freshwater or marine fisheries, or a related environmental field to join our team as a Fisheries Analyst, reporting to the Fisheries Lead.
Key Responsibilities
- Analyze resource development proposals, regulatory applications (e.g. Environmental Impact Assessments, Fisheries Act Authorizations) and new policy/legislation to understand impacts on fish, aquatic habitats, and Wolastoqey harvesting rights
- Communicate your analyses to Wolastoqey communities and gathering input from Wolastoqey members regarding impacts to harvesting rights
- Contribute to Wolastoqey-led fisheries and environmental management plans
- Develop strategic research proposals and funding applications to support WNNB’s consultation efforts and Wolastoqey communities’ goals regarding fisheries management.
- Contribute field research design and collection of fisheries and environmental data, as well a baseline and post-project monitoring
- Help build technical capacity within WNNB and Wolastoqey communities
The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications, attributes and skills:
- Bachelor’s degree or greater from a recognized post-secondary institution in a subject area relevant to the position (e.g. Biology, Zoology, Ecology, Environmental Management, Fisheries Management, Marine or Freshwater governance, Environmental Law). WNNB will also consider applicants with equivalent experience who do not hold a post-secondary degree or diploma
- Knowledge of New Brunswick’s marine and/or freshwater ecosystems, their species, and the threats and stressors they face.
- Comfortable with software such as Microsoft Word and Excel
- Ability to understand, summarize and critically evaluate scientific documents and literature.
- Excellent communication skills demonstrated through written and/or oral formats.
- Ability to prioritize work and manage multiple ongoing projects.
- Organize and maintain detailed records
- Maintain confidentiality at all times
- 2+ years’ experience or equivalent post-graduate education working in a field related to the position
- Knowledge of New Brunswick’s indigenous peoples, as well as the Peace and Friendship Treaties and the crown’s Duty to Consult and Accommodate
- Experience working within or partnering with Indigenous communities
- Familiarity with the concept of Two-eyed seeing
- Knowledge of relevant federal and provincial environmental legislation and regulatory processes
- Ability to prepare funding applications, manage budgets and complete reporting
- Ability to supervise field staff
- Familiarity with scientific, statistical and mapping software (e.g. R, ArcGIS, QGIS)
- Familiarity with field data collection techniques in fisheries, limnology, freshwater and/or marine ecosystems
Remuneration is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Wolastoqey Nation in New Brunswick offers competitive salary and generous pension and benefits to our employees. The Salary Range for this position is $60,000 – $73,000, commensurate with education and experience. Working location is 35 Dedham Street, Sitansisk (St. Mary’s First Nation, NB). This role will require working from our office a minimum of two days per week.
