Fisheries Analyst

We are seeking an organized, self-motivated individual with experience in freshwater and/or marine
fisheries or a related environmental field to join our team as a Fisheries Analyst. Reporting to the
Fisheries Lead, the main responsibilities of the Fisheries Analyst are:
- Providing critical analysis of resource development proposals and regulatory applications (e.g.
Environmental Impact Assessments, Fisheries Act Authorizations) to understand their impacts on
fish, aquatic habitats and Wolastoqey harvesting rights - Analyzing and providing input on fisheries and environmental policy, regulations and legislation
- Supporting the WNNB Fisheries Team in negotiations with the federal government regarding the
development of fisheries agreements - Contributing to the development of Wolastoqey-led fisheries and environmental management plans
- Communicating your analyses to Wolastoqey communities and gathering input and feedback from
Wolastoqey members regarding impacts to harvesting rights - Developing strategic research proposals and funding applications that will support WNNB’s
consultation efforts and Wolastoqey communities’ goals - Contributing to the design of field studies and collection of fisheries and environmental data, as well
as pre- and post-project monitoring related to resource development projects - Helping to build technical capacity within WNNB and Wolastoqey communities
Qualifications (required) - Bachelor’s degree or greater from a recognized post-secondary institution in a subject area relevant
to the position (e.g. Biology, Zoology, Ecology, Environmental Management, Fisheries Management,
Marine or Freshwater governance, Environmental Law) - Knowledge of New Brunswick’s marine and/or freshwater ecosystems, their species, and the threats
and stressors they face. - Ability to understand, summarize and critically evaluate scientific documents and literature.
- Excellent communication skills demonstrated through written and/or oral formats.
- Ability to prioritize work and manage multiple ongoing projects.
- Organize and maintain detailed records
- Maintain confidentiality at all times
- Fluent in word processing and software such as Microsoft Word and Excel
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s license and willingness to travel regionally
Qualifications (considered an asset) - 2+ years experience or equivalent post-graduate education working in a field related to the position
- Knowledge of New Brunswick’s indigenous peoples, as well as the Peace and Friendship Treaties and
the crown’s Duty to Consult and Accommodate - Experience working within or partnering with Indigenous communities
- Familiarity with the concept of Two-eyed seeing
- Knowledge of relevant federal and provincial legislation (e.g. Fisheries Act, Impact Assessment Act,
Species at Risk Act) and regulatory processes (e.g. Environmental Impact Assessment, Fisheries Act
Authorizations) - Ability to prepare applications for project funding
- Ability to manage budgets and complete reporting
- Ability to supervise junior staff
- Familiarity with the Microsoft software ecosystem (Outlook, Teams, OneDrive, Sharepoint)
- Familiarity with scientific, statistical and mapping software (e.g. R, ArcGIS, QGIS)
- Familiarity with field data collection techniques in fisheries, limnology, freshwater and/or marine
ecosystems
Remuneration is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Wolastoqey Nation in New
Brunswick offers competitive salary and generous pension and benefits to our employees. The Salary
Range for this position is $60,000 – $75,000
Working location is 35 Dedham Street, Sitansisk (St. Mary’s First Nation, NB). This role will require
working from our office a minimum of two days per week.
