A pre-election survey by the Wolastoqey Nation of New Brunswick has highlighted key differences in how the Progressive Conservatives (PC), Liberals, and Greens would address Indigenous issues if they form the next government. The survey, focusing on Aboriginal title, treaty rights, systemic racism, and resource development, was responded to by the PC, Liberal, and Green parties, but not by the People’s Alliance or NDP.

The PCs reaffirmed their stance that First Nations land was not surrendered, while the Liberals and Greens agreed with the Wolastoqey Nation that it was. On tax-sharing, the PCs oppose reinstating agreements, while the Liberals and Greens support them. The Greens also call for an Indigenous-led public inquiry into systemic racism, while the Liberals propose stronger anti-discrimination policies and cultural competency training in policing.

The survey reveals contrasting approaches to land-use consultation, with the PCs focusing on natural gas development, while the Liberals and Greens advocate for broader Indigenous engagement and legislative changes.

Wolastoqey Chief Allan Polchies expressed frustration with the current government and hopes the next administration will take Indigenous concerns more seriously.
