WOLASTOQEY TERRITORY – The Six Chiefs of the Wolastoqey Nation issued the following statement on the appointment of Joanna Bernard as the interim National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations (AFN):
“We are thrilled to congratulate interim National Chief Joanna Bernard on today’s deserved appointment.
It is important to acknowledge the appointment of a Wolastoqewi woman to this position.
For decades, interim National Chief Bernard has been a steadfast leader and champion of Madawaska Maliseet First Nation, the Wolastoqey Nation, and all Indigenous people in New Brunswick.
Her experience and perspective will be valuable in continuing the AFN’s important work to ensure the voices of First Nations are heard and respected, and in restoring confidence within the organization.
We look forward to supporting interim National Chief Bernard in this work.”
